# Available modes

> Qodo provides **three default modes**, designed for different development needs

Each mode has its own purpose, instructions, and [tool access](/qodo-ide/tools-mcps/what-is-an-mcp), so you can get started quickly without having to configure anything.

## How to change modes

To use a mode, choose it from the **mode dropdown menu** in the bottom-left corner of Qodo.

Once selected, the mode stays active across messages, adapting to your session's needs and maintaining context as you go.

## Available modes

| **Ask**  | Lightweight agent optimized for speed. Uses minimal tools in read-only mode. Ideal for quick questions and exploration.       | All tools, Read-only access |
| **Code** | Full-featured agent with access to all tools. Acts as a universal assistant for any task, from writing code to running tools. | All tools                   |
| **Plan** | Deep research and planning mode. Designed to help with architectural decisions and technical exploration.                     | All tools                   |
