# Troubleshoot background processes

> Use Background activity to check the status of repository sync, pull request indexing, cross-repo discovery, and rules and skills import, and to fix a process that needs attention.

Qodo runs background processes to sync repositories, index pull request history, discover relationships between repositories, and import rules and skills. Use the **Background activity** panel to check process status, understand why a process needs attention, and find the appropriate steps to resolve it. The panel appears in the top-right corner of the portal once processing starts.

Use this guide to check whether processes are running as expected and resolve any issues.

## What Background activity tracks

Each process has its own row in the panel:

* **Repository sync**: Syncs each connected repository with Qodo. For more information, see [Manage Git repositories by installation](/governance/repositories/installations).
* **Pull request indexing**: Indexes each repository's pull request (PR) history. For more information, see [Monitor and manage repositories](/governance/repositories/manage-repositories#check-repository-pr-history-indexing-status).
* **Cross-repo discovery**: Finds relationships between your repositories. For more information, see [View cross-repository relationships](/governance/repositories/relationships).
* **Rules and skills import**: Imports the rules and skills you select from your repositories. For more information, see [Generate and manage rules](/governance/rule-enforcement/generate-and-manage-rules).

A process appears in the panel only if it applies to at least one repository.

## Troubleshoot a process that needs attention

<Steps>
  <Step title="Check the status">
    Click **Background activity** to open the panel, then check each row.

    | What you see | Meaning | What to do |
    | :- | :- | :- |
    | <Icon icon="check" color="#16A34A" /> and a count, for example <Icon icon="check" color="#16A34A" /> 735 imported | The process finished. | Nothing. |
    | <Icon icon="spinner" color="#6B7280" /> | The process is running. | Nothing. Check again later. |
    | **Queued** | The process hasn't started yet. | Nothing. Check again later. |
    | **Needs attention** | Something needs a fix. | Continue to the next step. |
    | **Failed** | Nothing in the process worked. | Continue to the next step. |
    | No label, with a description | Something didn't work, but there's nothing for you to fix right now. | Read the description. |

    When a process needs attention, its row shows a **Needs attention** label, and the **Background activity** button shows a warning icon. The number on the button counts the processes that are running or need attention. When every process has finished, the button shrinks to a checkmark.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review the status details">
    A row that needs attention includes a short description of the problem and how to fix it, for example:

    * "payments-service and web-app couldn’t be indexed. Retry indexing in Repositories."
    * "acme-org and 10 more aren’t syncing. Check their status in Installations."

    Some rows also show an ⓘ icon. Hover over it to read a note. Notes are informational and require no action from you, for example when Qodo retries a process automatically.

    <Note>
      If you aren't an admin, the description asks you to contact an admin. Most fixes require admin permissions.
    </Note>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the page where you can fix it">
    Click the row to open the page for that process. When something needs attention, Qodo takes you to the page where the problem appears.

    | Row | When no action is needed | When something needs attention |
    | :- | :- | :- |
    | **Repository sync** | **Repositories**. | **Installations**. When Qodo can identify the installations with a problem, the list is filtered to them. Hover over an installation's status to see what's wrong and how to fix it. |
    | **Pull request indexing** | **Repositories**, sorted by indexing status. | **Repositories**, filtered to the repositories Qodo couldn't index. |
    | **Cross-repo discovery** | The **Relationships** table. If no relationships were found, **Repositories**. | The **Relationships** table. |
    | **Rules and skills import** | The **Rules** page. | The list of repositories that weren't imported, with the reason for each. If you can't edit rules, the **Rules** page. |
  </Step>

  <Step title="Fix the problem">
    Follow the description on the row or the item. Common fixes:

    * **Retry**: Click **Retry** next to the repository or installation.
    * **Reconnect or complete setup**: Reconnect the installation or complete its setup in Installations.
    * **Unsuspend**: Unsuspend the Qodo app in your GitHub settings.
    * **Rescan**: Select the repositories in the import list and rescan them.
    * **Auto-discover**: Run **Auto-discover** on the repository.

    For example, if a repository shows **Failed** under PR history indexing in Repositories, click **Retry**. Once indexing completes, the Pull request indexing row in Background activity shows a checkmark.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm the fix">
    Open Background activity again. When the process finishes, the row shows a checkmark and a count.

    If the problem persists, contact [Qodo Support](https://www.qodo.ai/contact/).
